Dear Alice Appliqué,
I'm sorry you couldn't be with us at the meeting Saturday.  We sure miss seeing your smiling face and look forward to seeing what you have been up to since the last time we meet.  But since you missed the meeting I guess I'd better fill you in on what we have been doing.
We decided that at the October meeting we will nominate officers for election in November.  The election will be held at the November meeting with the exchange of offices at the Christmas party and new officers will assume their role in January 2009.   We paid our dues this month which were nine dollars and that will last until the first meeting of 2009.
Several of our members went to the summer MQA meeting in Jackson and gave a report on the things they learned at the classes they took.  Terry took a class on curved paper-piecing and will teach us the technique at a workshop soon.   Joanne took a class on machine quilting and learned a few helpful hints as how to quilt a large quilt with as little bulk as possible.  Judy took a class on hand quilting and said she really enjoyed the experience of just relaxing and stepping back from the hustle in  which we can sometimes find ourselves trapped .   Sue said she learned a little more on making scrap quilts and was pleased with the block she made which requires a template to assemble it correctly but turns into a lovely spider-web design.
Our challenge block is due in and Julia asked us to brown bag it with the number of your block attached to the back side  of the block please.  I can't wait to see how these have been assembled since we all have such a wide variety of talents.
Wal-Mart has asked us to make a raffle quilt for the Children's Miracle Network at LeBonnher.  They gave us the supplies and we hope to assemble it after the August meeting.  Judy came up with a schedule of the activities for the rest of the year and we discussed them.  She should have a copy for everyone at the next meeting.  If you took the class of the 'Northwind' block in Meridian last year your asked to bring the blocks or the finished product to the meeting next time so that those who didn't take the class will know what to expect when we have it taught in Columbus.
The Pine-Belt quilters will be having a quilt show and they have flyers which explain the dates and the drop off places for any of the quilters interested in having a quilt judged.
The block we will be doing for next month is to be a 12 an 1/2 inch block of red, green, or Christmas print.  Yes that's right Christmas in July, so put your thinking hats on and dig through your stash.  Oh yes, Sue Seymer wound up with the red white and blue blocks that were turned in this month.
Mary Ann gave a demonstration on painting a quilted piece with oil pastels and colored pencils.  She will teach the project July 5th at the workshop and also after the July meeting for those who can't make it to the workshop.   Annette is having a class at her house on thread painting and fabric dying on Sept. 2  for anyone interested it looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Show and tell was exceptional this month with Sharon displaying her geisha which won a1st place in the quilt show in her home town

1st  place ribbon with a memories quilt also receiving a ribbon.  Julia showed a wall hanging inspired by the earthquake in China , a quilt top that she made to raffle for the school in her community and postcard she made from photos of things in her hometown and the twin towers under attack.  Lawanna brought her chenille bag she made in Sandi's class and C.C. brought the one she is still working on to show also.

Judy showed us a photo of the quilt her block was in which was a finalist in the Babylock contest.

Annette showed some of the thread painting she was working and had some of the fabric she had dyed.  I think that's about all  I can remember to tell you.  Sometimes things happen all at once and you miss out if your not careful.  I sure hope I'll see you at next month's meeting.

                                        Sew til then,
                                        Katie O'Possum
